How can you test the PH of soil without a soil testing kit?

How can you test the PH of soil (i.e. in your garden) without having to buy a kit for it? Is there any way you can do it yourself at home without the expense of a kit (any special chemicals, recipes etc).

My 6 yr old dtr has high fever,headache & elevated ketones in her urine. The Dr says it's dehydration. Advice?

No other symptoms, just headache, high fever and elevated ketones. She is tired with no appetite, but the doctor seems unconcerned. I keep seeing diabetes everywhere I look, but fever is not associated with it. Has anybody else had experience with this situation? Should we get a second opinion?

elevated ketones are highly associated with dehydration b/c the body begins to break down fatty acids in attempt to restore the bodies electrolyte balance as a result of there not being enough fluids in the body....

getting her rehydrated is key to restoring her electrolyte balance back to normal, which will result in the ketones in the urine going back to normal levels and the headache and fever disappearing...

best thing for her is water but you can also try gatorade. pedialyte works great too. older children prefer the freezer pops over the actual liquid you can buy but both work the same. avoid sodas and juices as these have high sugar content and can worsen the dehydration. you can also give her clear liquids to eat such as soup broth,popsicles,and jello....

for the fever children's motrin works best.

for the chewable tablets give her 4 every 6-8 hours but no more than 4 doses in 24 hours.

for the liquid suspension give her 2 tsp every 6-8 hours and also no more than 4 doses in 24 hours.

you can alternate motrin with tylenol if the motrin doesn't seem to be helping-rotate them every 6 hours....

diabetes is hereditary so if the parents do not have it, the chances of the child getting it are slim. fever is not associated with diabetes and one of the most distinctive signs of diabetes is the "fruit smelling" breath. your daughters breath would have a very strong "fruity" smell to it and it would be constant.

just keep giving her fluids and treat the fever-don't worry so much about her not wanting to eat. It's common for someone to have loss of appetite when they're not feeling well-especially children. i'm sure she'll be back to normal before you know it-good luck

i just cant picture the logic.. you see, vasoconstriction causes increase in blood flow pressure..so logically Glomerular filtration rate increases..if GFR increases, then sodium retention should be less?

This is hypoglycemic episodes. If he is diabetic--his insulin dose or oral medications may need to be adjusted. Begin checking his blood sugars before each meal and at bedtime. He should also be eating breakfast lunch and supper--each meal should be at the same time each day. If he is not diagnosed diabetic--follow the same meal plan and see if this resolves things. Watch for sleepiness 1-2 hours after meals and for a fruity-sweet odor to his breath and urine. A simple test to check sugar metabolism problems is the urine glucose check. you can buy the test strips over the counter at the pharmacy and check his urine according to bottle directions. Positive sugar in the urine means the blood sugar is at least 180 or more. normal blood sugar is 60-120. Positive sugar in the urine warrants a trip to the doctor.

Diabetes management help? tools or something?

SO I am sixteen and I have been diagnosed since the age of 11, Christmas day of that year to be exact. I am in High school and I have the best grade anyone could ever ask for( especially in french) The problem is is that my control isn't so easy as my school work is to me. There is no class I could take at school to get a better understanding of it either. My blood sugars range from high to low even if I do not eat at all. When I do take insulin I bottom out very often and can't figure out what is going on. Advice anyone??

I was like that for years. My blood sugars were all over the place no matter what I did. I went to nutritionists, diabetes counselors, different endocrinologists, tried taking more shots to even the highs and lows, everything i could do and nothing worked. Eventually as I got older and technology got better I got an insulin pump.
The pump changed everything for me. My A1c's went from 12's and 13's to between 6 and 8. I lost weight. I was able to eat things that normally caused super high blood sugars without all the problems and highs. All around better control with a pump.
You will need to see and endocrinologist to get the approval needed to get a pump. It took me several months to get approval from my insurance company also.
There is tons of information on the internet about insulin pumps. It really is a life changing experience to any T1 diabetic. In your situation an insulin pump could really help.
