Should genetic testing be used to select a child’s characteristics?
"Modern genetics can prevent the tragedy of a life doomed by heredity; embryos can now be screened for some genetic diseases. But what constitutes a disease? Should genetic testing be used to select a child’s characteristics? If so What characteristics?"
This is a discussion going on in one of my doctorate classes. I will not be plagiarizing any of you. I was just surprised by some of the opinions in class and wanted to hear some of yours.
I believe it is wrong to "custom make" your child, per science of these days.
Each child/human being is unique, and precious as they are. I don't know how many, cannot recall the details of each one, however there have been pregnancies where someone had the genetic testing (amniotic fluid testing, I think it's called) and found something wrong with the child. Could have aborted, however, when the child was born, the child was NORMAL.The test during the pregnancy was WRONG.

Can you determine a heart attack by change in blood pressure?
The reason I ask this is because last night I was having some pretty bad pains under both sides of my breasts. It only lasted a few minutes only to return again. I do not have high blood pressure but when I checked with my home monitor (which also records pulse rate) my bp was 132/72. I am normally at 117/68 or so. I also have a strong family history of heart disease and I also suffer from Type 1 Diabetes. Oh yeah, my pulse was at 101. When I stood up, my bp dropped to a normal 120/75. Cause for concern?
I realize that 132/72 is not high blood pressure by all means but it is quite elevated for me and didn't know if that was indicating heart trouble because of this pain.
Your symptoms do not sound like a heart attack and you cannot determine that you've had one by what your blood pressure is.

It is a handy little tool that tells us what the oxygen percentage of your blood is, and your pulse. Normal is above 95%, if it is lower, than supplemental oxygen (O2) should be given.
Some downfalls:
1) Cannot decipher between oxygen and carbon monoxide (CO). If someone has CO poisoning, it could read 99% O2 levels, when in reality it is alot lower.
2) Although is can tell you the pulse, it does not let you know if there are any irregular heart beats.
Therefore the pulse oximter should be used in adjunct with other diagnostic tools such as ECG.

Sweetheart, get to the doctor NOW. As in yesterday. Yes, this sounds like Type 1 diabetes and the longer it goes untreated the more there is increased chance of diabetic ketoacidosis which can lead to kidney damage, coma and even death.

How can I see myself whilst taking self portraits?

I'm using a D50. By the mirror thing I meant standing in front of a mirror, y'know Facebook style, however I've nothing against some sort of mirror attachment.
I think you are out of luck if your camera does not have an articulating monitor, which yours obviously does not have. I have an old Nikon 990 camera that is made such that the body and monitor twist separately from each other. You can turn the lens 180 degrees around so you can see yourself in the monitor while taking a self portrait. Here is the 990 on Ebay if you want to see what I mean.
I think Samsung now makes a camera with two monitors, one of which is a small monitor on the front of the camera.
I see you added details about the mirror. That was going to be my suggestion. You are just going to have to improvise some type of mirror arrangement that will allow you to see the monitor of your camera. I do not know of any specific attachments made for this purpose, but that is not to say something does not exist. I do know I remember seeing a device that mounted the camera out on a long extension that you could handhold, and I "think" there was also a mirror that allowed you to see the monitor, but I have no idea who made / makes it, plus I think it was made more for a small point and shoot camera rather than a heavier DSLR.
At any rate, tying to compose in such a manner with a mirror attachment would really be tough. I think your best bet is just to set up something to compose upon, then take it's place. So what if it takes many shots to get it just right. You are using digital so there is no film or processing costs.
