Hello, presently I'm out of work so I lost my Medical coverage. I have type 2 diabeties and take Glipizide and Metformin as well as use the Freestyle testing meter and strips. I'm curious are their any organizations out there that can assist me with the cost or offer free assistance with Diabetic supplies?
These are some sites I found that have programs that can help you. Many drug companys have there own programs to help with meds. I think you will find help on one of these sites, but if not , call the company that makes metformin and ask them if they know who can help you. They will have suggestions. Your doc. should know also. Good luck

Have just been diagnosed as Diabetes type 2,so does anyone have any dietary advice for me.One nurse is telling me to cut out all carbohydrates (potatoes, chips, pasta etc) and another is saying they are okay to eat ! I have also read that diabetic foods are no better (or worse) than ordinary foods including chocolate. Also, any alcohol advice,I don't drink that much but do like a good swish once every weekend.Any help/advice appreciated.
funny you should ask, actually; I work with a film company who is currently producing a film about how to care for yourself when you have diabetes. I'm not a doctor, but I work very closely with the consulting doctor we have on staff, so I'll try to reiterate his answers.
You don't necessarily need to cut out any foods, the key here is moderation. However, it is true that you should cut back on your carbohydrate intake. You should also get regular exercise. Now, you don't have to run marathons everyday; a good brisk long walk will do the trick. Try about 30 minutes three times a week.
So, reduce your carbohydrate intake, and increase your exercise. If you can do that effectively, there is often a good chance you won't need any other treatment, especially if you can loose weight in the process.
As far as alcohol is concerned; it's well known that alcohol can lower your blood sugar, it's also much more likely to do so on an empty stomach. You can have a drink, but do it in moderation, and be sure you eat something first.
Actually the doctor I work with says that alcohol in moderation is good for you. And not just red wine, ANY alcohol, from wine to liquor! So yeah, go ahead and have a drink on the weekend, have two even, but don't over do it, and remember to eat first.
A Diabetes diagnosis can be scary if you don't know much about it, but it's not a death sentence! It's easily manageable. The key is everything in moderation. Get exercise, loose weight, and make sure you do the finger stick bloodsugar tests as often as your doctor says.
The film we're making is set to be out within about six months, you might like to see it. If you want, send me an email, and when the film is done, I'll send you the info as to where you can get it. My email is below...

Hi i was with my midwife today for first appointment and heard heart beat.?
It the most amazing sound in the would. She mentioned about a baby kick wrist band for later on in pregnancy to count babykicks. Can anyone tell me were to get these or a website I can look at
Hi!!
First of all congratulations..
Here is the info you need:
The Jacob's Adder Story
The baby kick counter bracelet was invented in 2004 by first time mum-to-be, Caroline Baker. Like many modern women, Caroline worked right up to the week before her baby was due. Working in a busy office attending meetings and working with clients, Caroline found that she would often lose count of the number of kicks she had felt from her unborn baby each day. This meant that around mid-afternoon, Caroline would start to worry about whether her baby was doing fine.
Taking her kick chart in the back of her hand-held notes to work was awkward, and walking around with a post-it note tallying up the counts didn't work either. This is why Caroline came up with a simple bracelet that is also a counting device.
The bracelet is made up a band with numbers on and a cursor. By moving the cursor on each time she felt her baby kick, she had an instant tally on her wrist without having to think about it. During meetings it was easy to discreetly move the cursor on. This relaxed and informal way of counting kicks meant that Caroline was always sure of how active she had felt her baby to be, thus reducing the stress.
After her son was born, Caroline incorporated an L and R onto the band so that she could alternate sides to breastfeed from successfully.
You can contact them on 01745 536790 .
The original Jacob's Adder bracelet, designed for expectant mothers. Stop worrying about how many kicks you have felt from your baby in a day, use this simple counter to remember for you.
BREASTFEEDING EXTRA: Use the L and R to help keep track of which side to feed from next.
After the birth, why not carry on using the counter to remember 10 sets of Pelvic Floor exercises each day!

I am going to talk to my Dr. about insulin pump therapy Tues. I was checking out the Omni Pod but I like the idea of the continuous monitoring. I was just wanting to know how accurate it is. I have been looking at the one touch ping,. for one because it's water proof. And I was also wondering how much the supplies are also. Any advice on insulin pump therapy and continuous monitoring would be helpful!
I agree with Noccie about how useful CGM (Continuous Glucose Monitoring) is. I also agree that it's not as accurate as testing your blood glucose level with a fingerprick, but this is due to how and where the glucose level is sampled. With CGM you're actually measuring the glucose level from interstitial fluid. This is fluid from between the body's cells, rather than directly through the blood from a fingerprick.
Because CGM gives you constant feedback it's easy to see whether your blood glucose levels are static or on an upward or downward trend.
One advantage of CGM is that you can set your pump to alarm when your blood glucose level falls to whatever level you feel you need warning. Do bear in mind, however, that when testing the glucose level from interstitial fluid the result can be half an hour or more 'delayed' from what you'd get if you did a fingerprick. (Sadly, I found this out on numerous occasions. By the time my pump alarmed I was already unconscious. Please don't let this put you off though, I'm unusual in that I have hypoglycemia unawareness, and my blood glucose levels regularly plummet at very speedy rates.)
Supplies are extraordinarily expensive. I'm not sure of current prices, but when I was using CGM the sensors cost roughly 57 Great British pounds each (approximately 90 American dollars), and they need to be changed every 3 or 4 days ... pretty much the same as your 'set changes' for your pump. (I will tell you that you can 'cheat' and use the sensor for a little longer, but they do eventually stop giving a good signal, and definitely need changing then.)
I don't know how long you've been diabetic or what your current insulin regime is, but I believe, if you do opt for pump technology, why it's taken you so long to change over.
The amount of freedom that you experience with having a pump is absolutely phenomenal. Instead of injecting insulin several times a day, it's like having one injection every 2 or 3 days. (You can set different rates of infusion for different times of the day and/or night, and can have these infusion rates last for half an hour or several hours. It would take you a while to fine tune these rates to suit your individual needs, but your diabetes support team will be able to calculate a starting point for you.) When you feel like having something extra to eat, you simply press a few buttons telling your pump how much extra insulin you want it to infuse ... and whether you want it all infusing right away or over a few hours. This is useful if you're eating something like pizza, which has a higher fat content, thereby getting your pump to act more like a non-diabetic's pancreas would.
I don't know if you're already aware of this, but pumps only use fast-acting insulins. This means that you don't have a basal insulin to try and keep your blood glucose levels on an even kilter during the day and/or night. The pump keeps pumping 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I'm sure that you'll appreciate that this puts you at increased risk of experiencing hypoglycemic events. Because of this it's important that you test your blood glucose levels more frequently than you might have been doing with multiple daily injections. (To begin with, you'll even need to wake up during the night to test, at least until such time as you feel confident in your abilities to know that you're not going to experience hypos during the night. Obviously, this is made easier if you're confident about your abilities to count carbohydrates that you imbibe.)
If I've missed out anything that you specifically wanted information on please do feel free to send me an email and I'll do my best to answer for you. (Click on my avatar/photograph and send email.)

If you have been diagnosed with Insulin Resistance Diabetes and are taking Metformin: What is your dosage, how many times a day do you take your dosage, do you take it before or after a meal, how much weight have you lost, how long did it take for this weight to come off, do you experience dehydration due to the diarrhea it can cause, does this side-effect cause hemorrhoid flare-ups, have you combined your medication with any life style changes?
I would like to know if there is any validity in the weight-loss claims people are putting on the internet regarding this drug.
Thanks!
my daughter has metformin for her insulin resistance. but the main thing she was told to do was exercise and diet. a very, very nutritious diet that gives her the strength to do the exercise. the only thing she has to cut down are carbs and no sweets. i will give you her programme if you want. my dietician said magnese works as well as metformin.
