What sociological theory would the issue of diabetes fall under?
m doing a project for my sociology class and i need help relating my topic of the diabetes problem with a sociological theory (ex. conflict, feminist, functionalist, etc.) can anyone help me out here choosing one that fits?
any of them really
think first of their key concepts and how they might raise the kinds of questions you want to apply to the issue
1.symbolic Interractionism
Its key concepts include:
the looking glass self, impression management, social construction of reality, stigma, self- fulfilling prophecy, the role playing model of social interraction, back stage -front stage behaviour(especially of professionals eg doctors, nurses or patients)
2. conflict theory
concepts:
power relations,
discourses of power ie the way that some institutions eg medicine become powerful instituions from which major discourses of deviance are generated,
the three faces of power especially the second face of power- being able to gets one's issue onto the agenda for discussion, the lack of resources for the non profit making public health sector, appropriation of health resources eg medicines
Feminist version of conflict theory:
the gendered nature of the devaluing of the 'non perfect' body.;
the unpaid work of caring for the long term ill,
3. Functional concepts:
Each stage in the history of society has institutions that are particularly functional for that stage. Religion was one of the major instiutions maintaing social order and social cohesion in feudal agricultural communities . In modern urban industrial, and now consumerist societies, what functions does the institution of health and medicine play. How does it adaapt to new circumstances" How do specific new modern forms of ill health or disease affect the general society? How do people play their specific roles as patients/doctors/nurses when dealing with diabetes?

Do you agree with Rose Prince that feminism has caused our obesity epidemic?
"A nation where two generations of women have abandoned the kitchen in droves, Great Britain is now facing a health problem of apocalyptic proportions, a £40 billion annual NHS bill for heart disease, diabetes and obesity, diseases directly linked to unhealthy diets and lifestyles" http://silvanadesoissons.com/radio-4-today-programme-femminism-killed-cooking/
Perhaps actually. How many women these days cook meals from scratch anymore? Most people are too busy after work and just microwave a ready meal.
Since I lost my job I've taken on the role of housewife, which now includes cooking a real meal as I have more time to prepare.
It wouldn't have totally caused it, but the fact that some wives now don't have the time to create a healthy meal might have something to do with it

Can an the size of an arm cuff for blood pressure scew results! plz help!?
EVery time i go to my regular doctor my blood pressure is good and normal, they use the hand pump and the cuff is bigger to fit my arm (i got buff arms lol) and when i go to the hospital or OB its high and i swear they do it WAY to tight and the arm cuff looks like its for a child. Should i ask them to use a bigger cuff on me> im also 7 weeks pregnant?. Does it even make a difference?
I wrote an article on how to take a blood pressure properly and I would be pleased to send it to you but unless you have some medical background it may be difficult to understand. It may surprise you to know that medical studies have consistently demonstrated that 20 to 25% of the blood pressure units used in physician's offices are out of calibration meaning that they are inaccurate. It may also surprise you to know that medical studies have consistently demonstrated that nearly half of blood pressure readings taken in a medical setting are inaccurate. The reasons for this are many and outlined in the article I wrote referenced above. Blood pressure cuff size is very important if an accurate blood pressure is to be obtained. If by 'buff arms' you mean 'large arms' then this does present a unique problem that for decades I have been asking manufacturers to solve. All blood pressure cuffs assume that the upper arm is cylindrical but as we get larger the upper arm is typically more conical. There is no blood pressure cuff available that corrects for this problem. When this is the case only the upper end of the bladder of the blood pressure cuff is able to occlude the artery acting like a tourniquet and falsely elevating blood pressure. Even if the blood pressure cuff is properly applied how quickly it is inflated, how how it is inflated (inflating 'too high' falsely elevated blood pressure), and how quickly it is deflated all influence the blood pressure reading. What you have done in the previous 30 minutes prior to the blood pressure being taken influences the reading. Stress, feeling rushed, caffeine intake, smoking a cigarette and other factors will falsely elevate blood pressure. Indeed simply walking from the waiting room to the examination room and having the nurse promptly take your blood pressure falsely elevates it. The proper technique is to have you sitting for 10 to 15 minutes in the examination room before the blood pressure is taken. It also makes a difference whether you are seated on the examination table (which falsely elevates blood pressure) as opposed to sitting in a chair with arms. The arm of the chair supports your arm so that the crease of the arm (the antecubital fossa) is at the phlebostatic axis (at about the same level as the apex of the heart). In my 30 years of teaching medicine I would say that blood pressure is seldom taken correctly by physician or nurse. It may surprise you to know that both physicians and nurses are usually not taught how to take a blood pressure properly. They just see someone take a blood pressure and imitate their technique. Placement of the cuff on the arm is important as the center of the bladder of the cuff (not necessarily the cuff itself) should be over the center of the antecubital fossa. The position of the stethoscope in relation to the cuff is also important as is the quality of the stethoscope. Nurses all too often use an inexpensive stethoscope referred to as a 'nurse stethoscope' which is an insult to nurses. It is better thought of as a Fisher Price play toy. I give all of my nurses a proper stethoscope. An inexpensive stethoscope transmits sound poorly. The first heart sound which identifies the systolic blood pressure (the 'top' number) is very soft and low in frequency. Inexpensive stethoscopes do not detect 'soft' sounds and they do not detect low frequency sounds. I could go on with the many errors in taking a blood pressure properly but this is likely too long an answer already. A fault of being an educator. If you would like a copy of my article email me at johnerussomd@jhu.edu. I wish you and your baby to be the very best of health and may God Bless.

Hi, everyone. Our band has a gig on saturday and I'm having some doubts about our PA system. We actually have a 1200 watts powered mixer with 8 mono channels and 4x2 stereo channels. Our gig is in a closed bar/club. It's not very big, but not too small either. We are: Two guitars, one bass guitar, one keyboard, one drum and a once vocal. I was wondering if we should mic all the drum kit... cause the place isn't very big so I don't see the point. I think that only the drum bass and the snare drum should have a mic. My vocalist says that we should also put a mic on the toms. Who is wrong?
Also, what should the drummer hear in his monitor mix beside his drum? The guitars? Bass guitar?
And if you have any tips for a PA system for a Metal band, please don't hesitate. Thank you.
I agree you definitely need to mic the bass drum. Maybe the snare, depending on how loud it is naturally. In other words, I agree with you. As far as the drummer's mix, that's kind of up to him: whatever keeps him in sync with everyone else. He's probably more interested in bass and rhythm guitars. That can be tricky if he wants a different monitor mix than others. (Which requires another mixer and amp for each different person's mix). You may at some point decide you need another mixer for mic'ing the drum kit, that you can run through a compressor/limiter to keep you from smoking the treble horns in your PA; we used to do that often. Come to think of it, we may have had the whole system going through a comp/lim....I forget....was years ago.

Is it true that video games are as addictive as crack-cocaine?
I've heard that someone did a survey or something and has concluded that video games (of any kind) can be as addictive as crack if the player likes it very much. At first I thought this was BS, but I've heard this from many different cites (people, online, TV) and I am starting to consider otherwise. Does anyone know for sure weather or not video games are really as addictive as crack-cocaine?
Absolutely not, If you were to let a gamer who has never done a drug in his life hit a crackpipe he would pawn his gaming system off for more crack eventually. The difference is that video games aren't nearly as bad for you, all you have to do to not play video games for a week is keep your mind focused on something else, the only way to stop a crack addict that does crack as much as a gamer plays games would be to tie him up and make it impossible for him to get loose. I have tried cocaine, and video games there is really no comparison. People who are addicted to crack will even become physically sick if they go long enough without it and will also attempt to kill themselves.
